Park Won-gwi, Director of R&D at MedExel, was recently awarded the Ministry of Science and ICT and Future Planning Commendation at the 50th Science Day celebration for the successful commercialization of the Safety Pen Needle.

The Safety Pen Needle addresses the shortcomings of conventional pen needles, which can be reused multiple times. Designed for single-use, it prevents secondary infections that can occur from the repeated use of disposable pen needles.
Director Park stated, “The Safety Pen Needle is designed to prevent injuries caused by user negligence during self-injection and completely resolves the issue of secondary infections from reuse. From the early stages of development, we focused on patient safety and creating a world-class product, and with significant R&D investment and support, we were able to successfully bring it to market.”
MedExel’s CEO, Cha Dong-ik, added, “Unlike conventional pen needles, which are typically dominated by the world’s top five manufacturers, we were able to develop Korea’s first safety pen needle through thorough analysis of existing technologies and the integration of avoidance technologies.

Our Safety Pen Needle not only offers superior functionality, safety, and versatility compared to competing products but is also competitively priced. Having already obtained approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and CE certification, we are preparing for domestic and international distribution.”
MedExel, a small company with fewer than 50 employees, garnered attention as it was the only company in the medical device industry to receive this award, beating out larger enterprises.
